Mitral Valve

“Mitral regurgitation is the most common valvular heart disease worldwide and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality when left untreated.”

Douedi, S., & Alahmadi, M. H. (2026). Mitral regurgitation. In StatPearls [Internet]. National Center for Biotechnology Information. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507196/

The Sydney Heart Valve team worked to advance the treatment of mitral regurgitation through an innovative D-shaped tissue valve prosthetic. My contribution was to evolve the valve's stent design through eight iterations, each with distinct characteristics for rigorous durability testing of millions of cycles.

Each iteration incorporated insights from previous studies and hands-on feedback from cardiologists and heart surgeons.

The main challenge of this project was maintaining precision while working with minuscule dimensions and complex organic shapes designed to mimic the heart's existing valve geometry.

I collaborated with fellow designer Rennie Hsiao, who skillfully sutured tissue to the stents I developed, transforming them into testable prosthetics.
